About Katla

Katla is the name of the restaurant opened by Icelandic chef Atli Mar Yngvason, in collaboration with Lava Oslo. The restaurant opened its doors at Universitetsgata 12 in August 2018.

It takes its name from one of the biggest volcanos on Iceland and is an energetic place with an open kitchen, informal atmosphere and a high pulse. We cook food over open fire and prepare sauces on large lava stones called molcajetes, originating from Mexico. We apply techniques from Asia and Latin-America on local produce and the menu is ever-evolving, depending on what is in season right now.

Katla is an extension of Yngvason’s work at the iconic restaurant Pjoltergeist. At Katla he is given more space and higher temperatures at the wood-fired grill. The place is spacious and at the same time intimate, giving the guests an unique opportunity to observe the chefs in action.

The restaurant has a total of 60 seats at the bar, 45 seats in the dining room and a chambre séparée that comfortably seats a party of 16 people.

We do two seatings a day in the main dining room given you have made a booking, and keep the food bar open for drop-in guests that would like a glass or add some dishes off the à la carte menu.

The menu at the food bar is also available in a smaller version until late every night.

The smaller à la carte menu is also served at the food bar for lunch on Saturdays from 13.00 - 17.00.

Katla consists of two spaces:

•  The restaurant has two seatings a day.

The first seating starts at 17.00/17.30/18.00 and the second at 20.30/21.00/21.30, available upon booking. Here we only offer our set menu of 8.

•  The food bar is always available for drop-in guests who wish to order off the à la carte menu or just enjoy a glass of something good.

Seats at the food bar are only for drop-ins, and you will be able to choose one or many dishes from our bar menu while having the perk of our full wine list from the restaurant.

•  If you are looking to book for a party of 6 people or more or if you are looking to book our Chambre Séparée, please contact us by e-mail.

Opening hours:

Tuesday-Friday: kl.17.00-00.00

Saturday : kl.13.00-00.00

It is impossible to talk about Katla and head chef Atli Mar Yngvason without mentioning Pjoltergeist; one of Norway’s best restaurants that recently closed its doors for good.

This was Atli’s old stomping grounds where he cooked what he himself liked to eat, always based on the best available produce and often influenced by Asian and Latin-American cooking. Clean flavors that are true to the produce and a menu that takes advantage of the treasures of the Norwegian sea.

Katla is an extention of Yngvason’s work at the iconic restaurant Pjoltergeist. At Katla he is given more space and higher temperatures at the wood-fired grill. The place is spacious and at the same time intimate, giving the guests an unique opportunity to observe the chefs in action.

You will find chefs from amongst others Austria, Panama and Venezuela in the kitchen at Katla and the menu lists an eclectic mix of anything from shawarma and takoyaki to grilled turbot, pig’s head tacos and Norwegian scallops. The eight course menu is based on seafood seasoned with the hot-headed blend of chili, habanero peppers and salsa prepared á la minute to keep the heat rising.

At the restaurant you can enjoy a set menu of eight courses upon booking, or drop by the food bar to enjoy dishes from our à la carte menu with a spicy frozen margarita in hand.

Eat and enjoy!

Chambre Séparée / Parties

There is a mezzanine situated in the restaurant where you will find a separate room available for private dinners on every occasion; birthdays, weddings or other events.

The capacity is available from 8 people up to 16 people, but worry not, we except bookings for bigger parties in our main dining room.

Upon booking, you have the room for up to three hours from 17.00/18.00 or 21.00/22.00.

Send us you booking request at katla@katlaoslo.no

Katla’s focus on drinks is split into wine and frozen margaritas. Our frozen margaritas are made with fresh produce sourced by the chefs and our bartenders. You will be able to sip on one of these before, while dining or after the meal. Or if you just drop by the bar.

We all know it; good wine is good wine, plain and simple. At Katla we do not want to distinguish between traditional and modern styles of winemaking. Rather we want to showcase the best of both worlds.

Our producers work hand in hand with nature and tend to vineyards that produce some of the best wines of their regions. That is exactly why so many of the winemakers on the wine list are organically or biodynamically certified. Quality and taste is, of course, our compass and we guarantee that everyone3 will find something to suit their taste.

We also provide an extensive selection of beer and non-alcoholic beverages.
